Abstract:
This material is intended as an outline for introducing Robotics concepts to fifth graders using Lego Mindstorms, RoboLab and other materials. It stresses a general approach to the material that is part didactic, part group demonstration, part individual exploration and extensively “hands on”. The initial emphasis is on basic engineering and mathematics, but the material is easily connected to Fine Arts by emphasizing different projects, requiring “artful” documentation and stressing 2-D and 3-D design and CAD. Writing, drawing and documentation are central to this investigation. Students need to be able to communicate their processes and results.
